"Modern day Akkorokamui" 2D Mixed Media 11 x 12 March 2019 EXHIBITION TEXT: My intention with this piece was to give someone joy, I want people to be given good vibes when they look at this, I used a framed photograph bought from goodwill and acylic paint to create this piece. I was inspired by the artists John Brosio and photographer, Dmitri Kessel |

I first came up with my idea for my piece while watching youtube, I was unsure if it was okay to just use another artists artwork but my art teacher had also suggested the idea to me. I also knew I wanted to use dinosaurs like John Brosio for my addition to the other artist's work. I wanted to use my own style of dinosaur, while I loved the childhood drawing look, I like cartoonist dinosaurs more. Later in the process, i decided i liked the octopus in fatigue better for this particular piece, i also wanted to use Akkorokamui as my octopus creature from the folklore. My technique to create this look will be to draw the octopus in pencil first and then carefully paint over with a small paint brush.
|
Since I had watched my favorite youtuber, Threadbanger, do this on this technique on his channel, I really wanted to do the same. I went to good will and searched through the paintings. Then i stumbled onto Dmitri Kessel, Eiffel Tower on the seine. I was searching for a calm painting with a large sky to work with. This piece gave me exactly that. Dmitri is a photographer, this is one of his photos, I Plan on taking advantage of his cinematography and adding my own elements in paint. The element i used from him was his photograph.

Planning Drawings
This is my first planning sketch, my original idea was to use John Brosios dinosaurs as my additive element but i later changed my mind into what i currently use on the piece.
|
This was my second sketch which was more focused on disaster and contrast, i wanted to use bright red hues for the element so It would largely contrast. This decision led me to use the red tentancles in my final piece.

Process, Ideas and Intentions
Process
Once I had my idea, I wanted to be able to visulize it better before applying any thing to the photograph. i used the app picsart to layout my complete idea.
|
for my octopus tentancles i wanted the bright red hues of the Akkumori, i mixed several shades ahead of time so i could already have them for blending
|
After sketching in pencil, i filled in my sketch with white paint for a base
|
i continued adding several layers of white paint as the photograph is not the best surface for painting
|
Many times there were issues with the paint rubbing off from the brushstrokes, as the photograph is not a good surface for painting i had to let areas dry and then atttempt once again to cover it.
once i had the white suction cups done i used a pink color and created crevices next to each dot for the 3D effect of the suction cups. This i thickly applied the dark red ring around each suction cup with a dotting technique.
. |
once i had a decent amount of layers (4), i painted over it with my base red color. i did two layers of this red.
Once i had one tentancle finished, i moved to the next and the next until the octopus was finished.
|
Next i did the inside of the suction cups in white and layed out all of the suction cups with dots of white paint
for the finishing touches, i filled in areas of the photograph that i had missed up while experimenting, for example the bark of the trees that i had scratched off accidently.
|
Experimentation
I needed to experiment with the paint as the surface was just not taking the paint even when i switched to just plain white. I found that using normal brushstrokes only pulled paint off the surface so i tried different techniques. I found that using a dotting technique caused the least amount of damage. I was really struggling with a way to paint the tentacles, i didnt want it to be realistic but when i began using impressionism, as the photo shows, it did not please me so i had to go back to the drawing board which led me to use dotting and slight realism.
|
I experimented with the photograph as i did not ever paint on the surface ever before. I originally thought i could just paint on the photo with no issues but when i applied the paint, it was to translucent so i needed to come up with another method. this led me to creating the white base of paint to paint on top of. When I had started working on the project i intially was going to add a dinosaur to the background after placing one on the painting using the photo editor app pics art, i realized that i needed to rethink my desicion. thus i came up with the Akkorokamui idea. |
Reflection
I am very proud of this project. it was the first project i had worked on where i really needed to experiment and try on thing then try another. i used so many painting techniques on this paint that there are at least 20 layers of paint on the areas where the tentancles are. i also love the contrast of colors and spacing. i feel that all my experimentations and hold backs were worth it. While it doesnt look like how i originally intended, it exceded my expectations for this piece.

Critique
I feel that my piece came out better than I had anticipated it to be. I originally thought it was going to look really childish and slapped together but that's not what happened. I may not look like a Bougereau painting but that wasnt even my intentions. I am very proud that i stuck this one out even though i struggled with it time wise.

Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and it's effect upon your artwork?
Each of my inspirational pieces had a effect on my work in one way or another. For example, Since i had been inspired by odees collages it had effect on my work by giving me the idea of and ocean for my foreground and background
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
So Odee was describing himself and how he describes his art.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration?
One generalization from Odee was that he didnt want to be associated with the typical artsy people and their sterotypes.
What is the central idea and theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea and theme around my research was to put feelings in my piece, from Salvador Dali and don't think about it too much, from Odee
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that Odee wanted to visually express himself instead of making art.
