Process, ideas and intentions
Process
My first step was to gesso my plate. I had never used it before so i messed up and put it on too thick to dry. I also got it ready for my community to work on it, i put a few things on the canvas to inspire people who would be adding later on.
After that I copied the words onto a new project with a white background, I did this same process with both CREATE and SOMETHING seperately so i could free transform them seperately as well. The process to silk screen is fairly simple. You put a decent amount of ink on the top edge of your screen and then use your squeggie to pull the ink through. To pull the ink, you just drag (use some pressure) the squggie down your screen in a organised manner until the stenciled area is covered by ink.
|
My second step was to get my community to participate. Many were happy to help me out and pass it around. This was also my inspiration for the saying “create something “ because it’s essentially what I told everyone who helped
Before silk screening, i needed to create my stencils to silk screen. To do that i simply used an exacto knife and cut out my pre drawn silhouettes out of parchment paper. To begin silk screening onto my printed sheet of tyvex, I had to tape my parchment paper stencils onto the screen with painters tape. I secured the parchment paper by taping the edges onto the metal frame.
After completing a silk screen, you must flood your screen. You do that by taking your squggie and pulling ink back up your screen

When I finished my community piece, I scanned it and put it into photoshop. To get the letters to be the community piece I had to use the T tool(text tool) and type out what I needed and then select the community piece layer and then use the select tool over the letters. after selecting, i hid the text layer and copied the selected area.
I added an additional step to put tape onto the top of the screen that my parchment paper didnt cover so i didnt have to worry about ink going over the edge.
The final step of silk screening is to remove your stencil, hose and scrub the ink off of your screen. Since i had repeated the process i also needed to use a rag and a hairdryer to dry my screen for another use. When i was entirely finished i used soap and water to clean the screen off completely.

Experimentation:
I had orginally planned to have four silhouettes as my planning sketch shows but during the silk screening process, i thought it would look too cramped with four so i trashed one of my silhouettes and spaced out the others accordingly.

Reflection:
"I'm not sure if Photoshop is my favorite way to create art. I will definitely not be making more pieces with Photoshop on my own time," This is a quote from my last reflection and i really contradicted myself. After being able to use photoshop for a little longer, i got used to it, even though i had to come in during my lunches and acps again. I was very proud with my background results using photoshop, i even learned how to use gradient, text tool, the drawing tool and i used the hue tool again. I generally have no good or bad bias towards silk screening after learning how to do it at art club. it wasnt a very hard process for me and i thought it was very cool to re learn how to use the tools from people at miad, i espcially enjoyed cleaning the screens off, it was really satisfiying. overall i really enjoyed creating this piece and would do it again another time.

critique
I feel that my piece came out better than i had anticipated it to be, but thats usually how i feel. I originally thought it was going to look really bad and that i couldnt come up with a good enough idea to do the communtity piece justice. I felt much better after looking at barbra krugers pieces, it gave me the inspiration i needed. I silk screened way better than i had anticipated, i thought it was going to bleed everywhere. I feel like i messed up on my spacing of the figures in this piece, they dont seem even. Also one of the figures is disfigured. i feel like i did the communtiy piece justice though

connecting to the act:
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and it's effect upon your artwork?
Each of my inspirational pieces had a effect on my work in one way or another. For example, Since i had been inspired by odees collages it had effect on my work by giving me the idea of and ocean for my foreground and background
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
So Odee was describing himself and how he describes his art.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration?
One generalization from Odee was that he didnt want to be associated with the typical artsy people and their sterotypes.
What is the central idea and theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea and theme around my research was to put feelings in my piece, from Salvador Dali and don't think about it too much, from Odee
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that Odee wanted to visually express himself instead of making art.
