"Reagan Flag" Colored pencil on paper 8 x 11 in March 2019 EXHIBITION TEXT: My intention with this piece was to represent my high school, Ronald Reagan. I do this through vexillography and researching. I used colored pencil and paper to create this piece. I was inspired by Ronald Reagan and IB mascots, logos and values. |

For my research I looked into logos and images that represented my school, for many of my flag designs i went of of these images for inspiration, whether it was through colors, space, line or value. One technique I used repeatedly for my flag designs was manipulation of the space that the original logo used and simplifying it. Additionally i looked further into each of the logos values and meanings. for example, in many of my flag designs i felt it was important to include the ten IB learner profiles. During MYP, All freshmen Reagan students took the class Design and Tech. Everyone at Reagan has taken that class and knows the IB learner profiles fairly well. Not only are the ib learner profiles included in an IB logo, it is also included in our own school hallways, all Reagan students have got to walk down "Knowledge avenue" at least once in their time at Reagan. I also wanted my flag to represent the preparation for college, as our school is college prep, so I took inspiration from our mascot, the husky, and came up with a story for the flag. Huskies stem from their ancestors, the wolf. Ronald Reagan students know how important is to connect with cultural roots and backgrounds. Wolves, in pop culture are expected to howl at the moon and look up to it. Ronald Reagan students are expected to look up and prepare themselves for college. I felt it was immensely important to include this in the flag as many, if not all Reagan students look up to college in some shape or form. I want my flag to show that in shapes, forms, colors and lines.
Planning Drawings
This was my 1st group of sketches for this project. There are a total of 15. I wanted to use the colors of reagan primarly, as I wanted people to know where the flag was from and for. For many of my sketches, i was inspired through my thought map. Some of these ideas include, the prep for higher education, the IB program, IB profile traits and the reagan mascot, the husky. I really wanted all of the students at reagan to be represented so i didnt put much emphasis on the IB program. I wanted my flags focus to be on the essentials of our school, preparing reagan students for their futures, whatever path they may take.

These are my final two sketches, i felt that they both represent the idea i wanted our flag to represent the most. For the first flag, the ´ḿoon¨ or the large white circle, represents the the start of a new beginning after high school, as the color white symbolizes new beginnings. The circle represents movement of time. Each of the yellow MPS stars is a class of students, Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Each making their way towards the new beginning. The surrounding blue represents, Reagan, A school the students can lean on. it also represents trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, and intelligence. The second sketch symbolizes the same idea but in a more simple manner. |
Process, Ideas and Intentions
Process
To plan out flag ideas, sketch several different flags. try not to reapeat the same designs, ideas or elements more than once to get a large vareity of diverse ideas to start with.
|
once you finish several sketches, you can begin to look through and chose your favorite designs you would like to move forward with.
|
once a final design is decided, make out outlines or stencils to trace to keep your design clean. Make sure to line up the design before actually putting color pencil.
|
cut out each stencil and outline to the precise dimensions.
|
trace the stencils lightly with pencil.
spray the adhesive to the back of your flag.
|
Once the piece has adhesive, place your piece onto your mounting board, make sure to do this carefully so you have two inches from the bottom and 1.5 from the other sides.
|
Experimentation
Next i have to experience learning how to color with color pencils because i never knew how. I had to figure out how to fix mistakes. I found that a clean white eraser does wonderfully to fix areas that may have smudges. For example, the moon. |
I experimented with the stencils and when i printed them out i had to do it twice as my stars and circles were not good sizes. Also i had to use the same star stencil for each of the stars as i couldnt print out the exact same size. |
Reflection
Critique
i feel that my piece came out exactly as i intended it to be. I feel i could have done better to do coloring. I found that designing a flag and exploring vexiography was very interesting and i feel i mastered this.

Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and it's effect upon your artwork?
Each of my inspirational pieces had a effect on my work in one way or another. For example, Since i had been inspired by odees collages it had effect on my work by giving me the idea of and ocean for my foreground and background
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
So Odee was describing himself and how he describes his art.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration?
One generalization from Odee was that he didnt want to be associated with the typical artsy people and their sterotypes.
What is the central idea and theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea and theme around my research was to put feelings in my piece, from Salvador Dali and don't think about it too much, from Odee
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that Odee wanted to visually express himself instead of making art.
