Inspiration/critical investigation
Son of Man by Magritte |
Golconda by Magritte |
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Son_of_Mancitation For my piece "Time" i was inspired by The Son of Man. I used the idea of covering the face like Magritte did with the apple but with an hourglass. The hourglass is to show how people are really entrapped in time and nothing else.

I was also inspired by Golconda. in my piece, i use clocks instead of men. I admired the use of space that magritte uses and wanted to replicate that space in my own piece. |
Planning drawings
In this sketch i wanted to take a more extreme approach to the concept. I was going to photoshop a clock on fire that looks like its falling down on unsuspecting people. This would represent that time hits us when we least expect it. I would silkscreen either the flames or the people on, i never got to deciding after i drew my final sketch.
|
This was my very first sketch, it was the same concept but i took a different approach originally. I was going to use a photo of a distressed person and silk screen calanders on top. I later decided i didnt like this idea and ditched it
This is the final sketch, in this one i planned to photoshop all but the clocks on the bottom. The clocks on the bottom would be silk screened because they represent the time that has passed. The entire piece is supposed to take place inside of an hour glass becasue we are living through or in time. The hourglass on top of the peoples heads are inspired by The son of Man and they are there to show how people are really entrapped in time and nothing else. all the clocks are the same to show how time passes by but we are really all doing the same as if the time hasnt changed. The line of people is to represent how we each follow the same schedules and rountines.

Process, ideas and intentions
Process
When i began taking photos for the piece my original intentions were to have tons of different clocks but after discussing with a local artist, Jason Yi, I decided it would be better for my theme if i kept all the clocks the same.
I felt like my use of the selection tool was sloppy so I fixed it by using the drawing tool to add fluff onto the girls sweater, i also added frizz to the hair.
|
When starting my piece in photoshop, i used the photo above to show that people are all following the same line and life.
I added the clocks by simply copying the same layer i had started with and spaced them similarly to Golconda. After the clocks i quick selected the hourglass and placed it onto the persons face so it completely covered it.
|
once i finished using the select tool for my line of people, i needed a simple background but i thought using the gradient tool for a dark to light gradient would be the best use of space for my background ,as it will go with my next step
To begin silk screening, i needed my tyvex image, my stencils and a screen
|
Before silk screening, i needed to create my stencils to silk screen. To do that i simply used an exacto knife and cut out my pre drawn silhouettes out of parchment paper. To begin silk screening onto my printed sheet of tyvex, I had to tape my parchment paper stencils onto the screen with painters tape. I secured the parchment paper by taping the edges onto the metal frame.
|
The process to silk screen is fairly simple. You put a decent amount of ink on the top edge of your screen and then use your squeggie to pull the ink through. To pull the ink, you just drag (use some pressure) the squggie down your screen in a organised manner until the stenciled area is covered by ink.
|
After completing a silk screen, you must flood your screen. You do that by taking your squggie and pulling ink back up your screen
|
The final step of silk screening is to remove your stencil, hose and scrub the ink off of your screen. Since i had repeated the process i also needed to use a rag and a hairdryer to dry my screen for another use. When i was entirely finished i used soap and water to clean the screen off completely.
|
Experitmentation:
|
When i was first beginning the silk screening process, the instructor at miad told us to just tape the parchment paper onto the back of the screen and to be careful of the gaps in the screen. I thought that it would just be easier to tape the front of the screen that showed so I didnt have to worry about spills at all.

Reflection:
"I'm not sure if Photoshop is my favorite way to create art. I will definitely not be making more pieces with Photoshop on my own time," This is a quote from my last reflection and i really contradicted myself. After being able to use photoshop for a little longer, i got used to it, even though i had to come in during my lunches and acps again. I was very proud with my background results using photoshop, i even learned how to use gradient, text tool, the drawing tool and i used the hue tool again. I generally have no good or bad bias towards silk screening after learning how to do it at art club. it wasnt a very hard process for me and i thought it was very cool to re learn how to use the tools from people at miad, i espcially enjoyed cleaning the screens off, it was really satisfiying. overall i really enjoyed creating this piece and would do it again another time.

critique
I feel that my piece came out perfect, it was exactly how i wanted it to be, almost. the silk screened clocks didnt aline the way i thought that would but they still look nice. I feel like this piece really shows the elements that i was inspired by, its more obvious than i thought. I learned how to use the gradient tool and the draw tool in this. The gradient puts emphasis on the falling like i wanted. The drawing tool made my models sweater look less choppy and more realistic.

Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and it's effect upon your artwork?
Each of my inspirational pieces had a effect on my work in one way or another. For example, Since i had been inspired by odees collages it had effect on my work by giving me the idea of and ocean for my foreground and background
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
So Odee was describing himself and how he describes his art.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration?
One generalization from Odee was that he didnt want to be associated with the typical artsy people and their sterotypes.
What is the central idea and theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea and theme around my research was to put feelings in my piece, from Salvador Dali and don't think about it too much, from Odee
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that Odee wanted to visually express himself instead of making art.
