Critical investigation
Ohhh...Alright by Roy Lichtensteinhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohhh...Alright...
Since I had always wanted to make a pop art inspired piece and block print work best with minimal detail, I decided this piece would be best to use pop art for. This particular piece was created by Roy Lichtenstein, american pop artist . He is a leading figure in the pop art movement so he has many pieces, I looked through many of them but this one was the piece had seen first. Most of his pictures are made with a comic aesthetic to them, painted with dots. The elements I used from him was the style he used to create his figures and their faces. I love his use of shapes to create his faces. I wanted my girl to be on the phone also, but to show the disconnection, I did not include the caressing hands that Lichtenstein has in his. If i were to include them then the character would seem more connected to the plane she´s in, and disturb my meaning.

Then by John Brosiohttps://johnbrosio.com/
When I had first begun searching for inspiration to create this piece, I had wanted to connect this to my comparitive study that I was working on during the time. I wanted a modern surrealist artist similar to Magritte. I soon found John Brosio, he was a perfect fit and now he´s one of my favorite artists, next to Magritte. The piece Then was the first piece that stood out to me while I brosed through Brosios works. I found it funny and wanted to use that amusing childlike element in my own piece. Obviously, I had took inspiration from the giant childlike drawn dinosaurs. I had took the idea from John and I changed it up a bit by adding the cartoony fighter jets. These jets were just like how I had used to draw jets next to monsters when I was younger.

Planning drawings
This was my first sketch, i drew this before i had searched for inspiration and it was entirely from my own head. I wanted to go for a scary movie look, and have a small figure illuminated in the center. Later i realized this piece would be more befitting a dry point and block print would not do it justice. I still wanted to used a phone type meaning in my piece and that concept made its way into my final piece. I wanted to use the phone concept because my last work Stress of Social Media didnt turn out how i would have liked to be so i wanted to try again with my block print.
|
This was my second sketch, This was inspired by John Brosios ´Review.´´ Since my first sketch was to complex, i thought that john brosio´s Review would be a great piece to keep my elements simple. I did not like how simple it was so i ditched this idea. Im not a fan of minimalistic works and I did not plan to create one.
|
This was my third sketch, After sketching a completely simple work, I decided to go back to something more complex that I´d be more proud of. I really liked this one but not only was it too much detail for my first block print, it was nearly copy and pasted from John Brosios work, it has zero originallity to it. I was not going to be a copy cat so I went back to the drawing boards.

Process
Once deciding on a sketch, before I could get started, I needed to transfer and redraw my sketch onto my block as shown in this image.
|
For the smaller details like the letters, used the smallest blade i could. To get the inside of an o for example, I would stick the blade into the center and spin it in a circle very carefully and slowly.
|
For the larger areas I used the round blade because it was the most comfortable blade for me to use to carve out larger areas with out tiring. One still needs to be causous during large area, not just to make sure you dont mess up, but i cut my hands up real bad.

For the printing process, you must have the following materials; water based block print ink, a brayer, a roller, a paint mixer or a spoon and some type even tray to spread ink evenly.
|
First you must spread ink onto your tray. The amount depends on how many prints you intend to make.
|
Next use the roller to spread the ink onto your tray. Once you have done that, roll over one spot continuously until the ink in that area has an even texture.
|
Once the ink is even on the roller, you can begin rolling over the block and covering all areas evenly with the ink.
|
once all the areas you want to print have ink on them, you can take what ever paper you have avaliable and set it evenly on your block to the best extent of your ability. Next, grab your brayer and put pressure all over your block evenly. do this in a rubbing motion. Then remove paper and your print is completed.
|
Experimentation
For my experimentatation, I had lots of difficulty getting the print to come out the way I wanted to, this resulted in many prints. I experimented with different amounts of ink, the block being washed, unwashed it wasnt working. After I had printed out ten or so, I wouldnt say I gave up on the printing method, but i was not going to waste any more paper. I tried to figure out a way i could fill in the areas that I was missing in another way. First i took one of my prints and filled in areas with a sharpie, I didnt like that. I considered using photoshop but I didnt feel like doing that. After staring at my prints and looking around the art room, i remembered what i did for my drypoint! I was so happy i remembered this. I had simply used my finger and put ink were i wanted it. Problem solved.

Reflection
I really liked my outcome of doing a block print but I dont think i will be doing this again for my hands sake. I cut my hand so many times trying to do my print. I will definitely not be making more pieces with the block print method any time soon. Overall i enjoyed the carving process, it may have been time consuming, repititive, messy and painful at times but the peeling was really satisfiying. When I first started this project I was hesitant because I did not like the drypoint because it didnt turn out how i had wanted. I was really concerned for this piece because i didnt want another piece that i really didnt like. In the end, My worry was not justified because the piece turned out just fine.

Critique
I feel that my piece came out better than i had anticipated it to be. I originally thought it was going to look really childish and slapped together but that's not what happened, coincidently, this was exactly how i felt about my very first piece i created at the start of the year Crybaby. Possibly because i took risks in both pieces. It was risky to include a childishly drawn thing in my work but I feel i pulled it off.

Connecting to the act
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and it's effect upon your artwork?
Each of my inspirational pieces had a effect on my work in one way or another. For example, Since i had been inspired by odees collages it had effect on my work by giving me the idea of and ocean for my foreground and background
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
So Odee was describing himself and how he describes his art.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration?
One generalization from Odee was that he didnt want to be associated with the typical artsy people and their sterotypes.
What is the central idea and theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea and theme around my research was to put feelings in my piece, from Salvador Dali and don't think about it too much, from Odee
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that Odee wanted to visually express himself instead of making art.
